The Gardner Partnership designed the off-grid residence for comfort, self-sufficiency and low maintenance while making the most of the earth’s oldest and most reliable heat and light source.
Sun studies determined the east to west orientation of the slab on grade structure. A long, narrow floor plan guarantees large solar gain and allows natural sunlight to reach the north side of the building. The cross section of the house allows for as much natural ventilation as possible, and a simple ducting system distributes evaporative cooling in the summer and recirculate warm air throughout the 2,500-square-foot home in the winter.
Photovoltaic cells and an evacuated tube solar domestic hot water heating system further contribute to the self-contained dwelling. Building materials are tough, weather resistant, and aesthetically pleasing in the colorful natural setting.
